The Successful Opening of the Fourth ‘China DR-TB Forum’

From 18th to 20th July 2018, the Fourth ‘China DR-TB Forum’, also the 2018 National Training Course on the Prevention and Treatment of DR-TB, was held successfully in Chengdu, Sichuan province. This event was organized in concert by the Beijing Chest Hospital, Chengdu Public Health Clinical Center, the TB Clinical Center of the China National Center of Disease Control, the TB Branch of the China Medical Association, the National TB Hospital Consortium as well as the Innovation Alliance on Tuberculosis Treatment and Diagnosis (Beijing).

The opening ceremony was hosted by Mr. Tian Ming, deputy director of the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Center, also the chairman of the forum. Senior figures attending the event also included Mr. Xu Shaofa, director of the Beijing Chest Hospital; Mr. Li Liang, deputy director of the Beijing Chest Hospital, chairman of the TB Branch of the China Medical Society; Mr. Jia Yong, deputy director of the Chengdu Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission; Mr. Liu Yong, director of the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Center; Prof. Fu Yu, from the Beijing Chest Hospital; Prof. Tan Shouyong, from the Guangzhou Pulmonary Hosiptal; Prof. Wang Weihua, party secretary of the Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital; Prof. Du Juan, from the department of respiratory diseases of the Affiliated Hospital of the Guiyang Medical University; and Mr. Zhang Zonde, deputy director of the Beijing Chest Hospital.

In the opening remarks, Mr. Xu Shaofa, extended a warm welcome to all who are attending the event. He also provided three recommendations to the audience. First, better integration and collaboration between the field of medical fundamental research and clinical field in dealing with DR-TB, so patients can benefit from the latest research revelations; Second, a strategy of multi-disciplinary treatment should be gradually adopted in China’s DR-TB treatment; Thirdly, hopefully we can have more fruition of our fundamental research, these fruitions are translatable and thus applicable to our daily clinical activities. Then, Mr. Jia Yong, deputy director of the Chengdu Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, and Mr. Liu Yong, director of the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Center delivered welcoming remarks representing the local hosts respectively.

This forum attracted more than 300 experts, scholars and medical professionals, who surrounding the topics of DR-TB prevention and control, the latest development in the DR-TB fundamental as well as clinical researches both domestically and globally, have thoroughly exchanged their respective ideas. The forum had invited some 20 renowned TB experts in and out of China to bring to the audience a wide range of topics, namely, the implementation of MDT strategy in the diagnosis and treatment of DR-TB, the infection control of DR-TB, the update on the hospital data standardization project, sharing of experiences gained from implementing the New Drug Introduction and Protection (NDIP) program as well as accessing the clinical data collected from dispensing Bedaquiline around the world, the DR-TB’s molecular mechanism and its research progress, the immune mechanism of DR-TB and its research progress, the diagnosis and treatment of pediatrics DR-TB and its research development, the host guided treatment of DR-TB, the latest development of DR-TB’s radiological diagnosis, the latest development of DR-TB surgical treatment, the latest development of DR-TB chemo-therapy, the latest development of immune treatment of DR-TB, the nutrition support therapy of DR-TB, the latest development of intervention therapies of DR-TB, the latest development of DR-TB/HIV diagnosis and treatment, the latest development of DR-TB diagnostics, the adverse events of DR-TB and their handling, the latest development of molecular pathology diagnosis of DR-TB and the surgical treatment of XDR-TB. Thanks to the wide coverage of topics and vivid illustration of the lecturers, the audience found the training course greatly rewarding.

Upon conclusion, Mr. Tian Ming summed up the two-day event by saying that the organizing of the China DR-TB Forum provided the TB-specialized medical professionals with a valuable platform of mutual learning and communicating, played an important role in improving the overall competency of China’s DR-TB diagnosis and treatment. The forum brought to the audience the latest development of DR-TB prevention and treatment, as well as fundamental and clinical research progresses. Hopefully, the audience can apply the newly learned knowledge into their daily clinical practices, so as to benefit the wider TB patients and contributing to the realization of the ‘End TB’ strategy.
